Environment

HSBC has a long standing commitment to the environment. We manage our impact on the environment by operating as efficiently as possible and by making wise lending decisions. We also understand that we can do much more. As one of the leading financial institutions, we can invest and profit from projects that advance the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

Climate change represents the single largest environmental, social and economic challenge this century and will impact HSBC's customers, employees, and shareholders. It is, therefore, a key focus of HSBC's sustainability strategy.

Managing our footprint

HSBC manages the direct environmental impacts of the business by working to reduce energy and water use, waste and carbon dioxide emissions. This is achieved by improving the environmental performance of the Bank's operations and incorporating sustainability into purchasing decisions.  Read about the environmental targets we have set.

HSBC became the first major bank to become carbon neutral in 2005. The Bank continues to maintain its carbon neutrality - meaning its worldwide operations contribute zero net carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Read more about HSBC and Carbon Neutrality - 6 page pdf 425k.

Managing the way we do business

HSBC recently appointed Lord Nicholas Stern to advise the Group Chairman on economic development and climate change and is currently developing the Climate Change Centre of Excellence.

HSBC takes part in the Carbon Disclosure Project, an initiative that facilitates dialogue between shareholders and corporations on carbon emissions and climate change. HSBC completes a yearly questionnaire that requires us to explain how we take account of climate change on our business.

Working with partners

In 2007, HSBC launched the HSBC Climate Partnership - a five-year US$100 million partnership with world-class environmental charities to tackle the threats of climate change. Through the partnership, HSBC hopes to make a real difference in addressing climate change and improving our sustainability.
