I don’t speak a second language. Can I still apply?

No. You have to be able to conduct business in English plus at least one other language at the time of applying. We also look for candidates with an aptitude for languages because you will need to speak a third language within your first five years as an IM.

I don’t have a background in finance. Does this matter?

No. We look at each application on its own merits. You must, however, be able to demonstrate a commitment to global mobility. If you have previous experience, you must also be able to demonstrate leadership and a background that will lend itself to International Management.

What are the available start dates for 2009?

We have start dates available throughout the year, and will confirm the availability when we make offers.

Can I choose which part of the business or which country to work in?

No. International Management assignments are arranged according to business need. If you apply to be an IM, it is essential that you understand that you will be developing a generalist career, and you must have the flexibility to work in any of the 83 countries and territories in which we operate.

When will I find out where my first posting is?

If you are attending our residential induction programme (new graduates only), you will usually find out where you will be working on your first day with HSBC. If you are joining us at a more senior level, we will let you know as soon as we have a posting arranged for you.

Can I re-apply to be an International Manager if I have been unsuccessful in the past?

You can re-apply, but you should think carefully about the reasons why your application was unsuccessful last time.
